Paying for Your Degree
Paying for college comes with a lot of options, and we’re here to help you make sense of them. At WSSU, around 85% of our students receive some form of financial aid. From federal aid and scholarships to payment plans, here are some of the most common ways students fund their WSSU degree.
The first step to accessing most financial aid is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Submitting early helps ensure you’re considered for the widest range of aid, and the process is only about 30 minutes.
Do I really need to fill it out?
Any student who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should fill out the form. This includes grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans. Submitting early helps ensure you’re considered for the widest range of aid.
If you’re unsure if you should, you can always discuss it with your admissions representative.
What do I need?
Grants and scholarships are forms of financial aid that don’t need to be repaid, making them one of the most valuable ways to pay for college. They’re typically awarded based on financial need, and can be applied toward tuition, fees, and other education-related expenses.
Next NC Scholarship
Unlock your potential with the Next NC Scholarship Program. Designed for families in North Carolina that earn $80,000 or less per year, this program can be used to cover tuition, fees, and more at any of the 58 community colleges or 16 UNC System universities across the state. Online students meeting other criteria of the program are eligible
for consideration.

Interest begins accruing when the loan is disbursed, but flexible repayment options are available after graduation to help you manage your investment.
Graduate PLUS Loans
Graduate PLUS Loans are available to students pursuing graduate or professional degrees and can help cover remaining education costs after other financial aid is applied. With fixed interest rates and flexible repayment plans, they provide an additional option to support your continued education.
Military education benefits can significantly reduce the cost of earning a degree, offering service members, veterans, and eligible family members a range of programs designed to support higher education. Qualification varies; please contact us for assistance with determining benefits usage specific to Flight Path programs.
GI BILL®
The GI Bill® provides education funding for eligible veterans and service members to help cover tuition, fees, and sometimes housing and books. Eligibility and coverage vary based on service history and the specific program of interest.
Yellow Ribbon Program
The Yellow Ribbon Program helps eligible veterans pay for out-of-state, private school, foreign school, or graduate school tuition and fees that exceed the Post-9/11 and GI Bill® limits. Availability and award amounts vary. Speak with an admissions representative to learn more.
